Friendships can either make learning attractive or they can derail a child’s motivation altogether. Friendships are where a child learns how to relate to others and works at practicing patience, forgiveness, kindness, and compassion. Most parents talk to their kids about grades. I’m convinced we need to talk to them at least as much about relationships. Here are four conversations I think parents and children need to have.
Hopefully, you’re not reading this because you want to start a cult. But I think it’s important that we understand the ingredients of Christian cults so that we can recognize them when they come. Here’s how you might start a cult that taught that you have to be baptized to be saved.
There’s a belief that New Testament prophecy may contain a kernel of truth even if there’s a husk of error. Something can get lost in the translation. There’s also an appeal to what I’ll call humble prophecy. Instead of saying, “Thus says the Lord,” people are encouraged to say things like “I feel God wants me to tell you this.” All of this seems well-intentioned. But is it biblical?

The internet is a useful tool for Christians. Through the internet, Christians now have easy access to a wide variety of Bible translations, commentaries, sermons, and Christian blogs and podcasts. Another helpful thing the internet provides Christians is internet chatrooms. While some of you may not have heard of them before, I have made and continue to make great use of these online meeting spaces. Through chatrooms on platforms like Facebook, Reddit, and Discord, I have connected and conversed with many hundreds of Christians from various parts of the world and Christian denominations across the spectrum. We have shared edifying insights, helpful resources, and unique perspectives which we would not have had access to apart from this online fellowship. But while I love all the useful tools that the internet provides me as a Christian, I was in for a surprise with what I experienced from the chatrooms. Let me share some of the lessons God taught me along the way.
