GUEST SPEAKER: WAYNE BAXTER | AUGUST 13, 2023
It’s hard to live life well without making plans: what career path to take, who to marry, where to live. People make plans all the time; but what does God have to say about that? Our text speaks specifically to this part of our lives.
James 4:13-17
outline
Christians should want to get closer to God, be more holy, and strengthen their spiritual lives. But the only way to do that is to delve deeper into Christ's love and grace. In this sermon, we are reminded why there is no way to improve on Christ's person and work for us.
Colossians 1:15-23 // [outline]
Selena Gomez sang, “The Heart Wants What It Wants,” and Elvis Presley gave us, “It Feels so Right. How can it be wrong?” And yet in the Bible, God repeatedly warns that certain love relationships are out of bounds. One of those is between Christians and non-Christians. This message looks at Solomon’s dating habits and why God cares enough to interfere in our love lives.
1 Kings 11:1-8 // [outline]
Unfortunately, it is not an uncommon thing to see people who grew up in the church and always had the right answers walk away from their faith completely. This message looks at how although Solomon had all the right answers, was a great leader, and heard from God directly, he still didn’t get a free pass. This should serve as both a warning of what things do not equate to salvation and a reassurance of what it is that we can truly trust in.
1 Kings 8:54-9:9 // [outline]
Moral and spiritual failure often leaves us feeling like we’re in the doghouse. We can feel stuck and struggle to find a way forward. This message looks at how God meets us in those times and clears a path to our restoration.
Genesis 35:1-15 // [outline]
Stress brings out the worst in all of us. While we’re all affected by COVID-19 differently, most of us are experiencing added pressure. We will either turn to God for relief or something else. What we place our hope in is critical. According to the Bible, worship is the act of declaring our hope and identifying our ultimate allegiance. This message looks at how to worship God in a pandemic and find relief from the false hope that we might otherwise trust.
Psalm 115 // [outline]
How do you feel thinking about or preparing for worship? Excited, exhausted, conflicted? Today we will turn to Psalm 135 and be reminded that no matter what is going on in our lives or in the world, God is always worthy to be praised!
Many people ‘like Jesus’ and believe in Him, to an extent. But they never seem to make any progress in following Jesus into the life that He calls us to. This message looks at a pivotal event in the revival that took place under King Josiah and the steps we need to take to avoid straddling the fence in our relationship with God.
2 Kings 23:1-20 // [outline]
